The fall cleanup checklist

• Clear the leaves — repeatedly. A single late cleanup is not enough; leaves keep dropping. Left on the lawn, a wet mat smothers the grass and breeds snow mold.
• Cut back perennials and pull spent annuals so beds head into winter clean.
• Pull the last of the weeds before they drop seeds for next year.
• Give the lawn a slightly shorter final mow to prevent matting.
• Keep walkways and the driveway clear of debris so they are ready for snow season.

Why leaves are the big one
