When Should You Stop Mowing Your Lawn in Massachusetts?

The short answer: stop when the grass stops growing — usually late October to mid-November in the Worcester area. Here is how to know for sure.

It is one of the most common lawn questions we get in the fall: when is it time to put the mower away for the year? In Massachusetts the honest answer is not a date on the calendar — it is when your grass stops growing.

The simple rule

Cool-season grasses (the kind nearly every lawn in the Worcester area is made of) keep growing until the soil temperature drops below about 50°F. Once daytime highs are consistently in the 40s and overnight frosts arrive, growth slows to a crawl and you can stop mowing. For most of Worcester County that lands somewhere between late October and mid-November.

Watch the grass, not the date

Some years stay mild into November; some turn cold early. Instead of guessing, watch the lawn. If it has not grown enough to need a cut in two to three weeks, you are done for the season. A good final-cut habit is to drop the mower height slightly on the last mow or two so the grass heads into winter a touch shorter — that helps prevent matting and snow mold.
