How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn?
Most lawns need mowing every 5–7 days in spring and early summer, then less often as the season cools. Here is the season-by-season breakdown.
Mow too rarely and you stress the grass and end up with a ragged, clumpy cut. Mow on a smart schedule and the lawn gets thicker, greener, and crowds out weeds on its own. Here is how often to mow in the New England climate.
The one-third rule
The golden rule of mowing: never cut more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mow. Cutting shorter than that shocks the plant, weakens the roots, and invites weeds. That one rule is what drives the schedule below.
A season-by-season schedule
- Spring (April–June): every 5–7 days. This is peak growth — skip a week and you will be cutting way more than a third.
- Mid-summer (July–August): every 7–10 days. Growth slows in the heat; mowing too short now lets the soil dry out.
- Fall (September–October): every 7–14 days, tapering off as growth slows.
- Winter: none — the grass is dormant.
Why a set schedule beats mowing “when it looks long”
By the time a lawn looks obviously overgrown, you have already blown past the one-third rule. A consistent weekly or biweekly schedule keeps every cut light and healthy — which is exactly why we mow on a fixed day instead of waiting for a call.
